I always say I'm a pirate fan... why? Because of this piece of Awesome Pirate here! Someone will say Luffy and I snort and say Harlock would kill him... in a heart beat 'cause he's not a real man. They just look at me like I'm crazy, but that's OK. I'm glad I don't have crazy fangirls (we're rather sane by todays fangirls standards, I have to say!) that are trying to slash him with whoever else is male *rolls eyes* ANYWAY! I lovelovelovelove this so much! I love the folding on his flightsuit and the folds in general. I also love that it's the AOMY/SSX version without the odd Blue turtleneck
Harlock always has and always will be one of my first loves. Random pirates don't hold a single candle to him and his beautiful character. He's far more complex and intricate that the majority of other characters out there! It's like someone laughed at me when I said I loved Tezuka's Blackjack. I told them to bite their tounge because otherwise, if it weren't for Tezuka creating Astro Boy, anime as we know it wouldn't exist! Of course they laughed at me until the lady that ran the Harlock Panel laughed at them!
However, for One Piece I do have to say that I'm much more a Chopper fan 'cause Chopper is pretty awesome for being a Magical Blue Nosed Reindeer Doctor...
Harlock will always be a favorite of mine, because in some ways, he kept me sane during some trying times. My first 'meeting' with him, was through a cheap VHS copy of Arcadia of My Youth (the title on the tape box had been 'Vengeance of the Space Pirate' ). It was 'love at first sight!' Afterwards, I had to track down everything that was Harlock-related (or Matsumoto-related)....Harlock Saga, Cosmowarrior Zero, Queen Emeraldas, Maetel Legend, Captain Herlock: Endless Odyssey...Later on, my friend Ligthingtooth helped me get ahold of subtitled versions Space Symphony Maetel and Captain Harlock '78, and through a now-gone online store, I found Endless Road SSX and the 'ani-manga' for Arcadia of My Youth!
It was also through a strange coincidence that, during the late 80's to early 90's, that a Captain Harlock comic book had been published (even weirder, was the fact that Ben Dunn of 'Ninja Highschool' fame, had done the earliest issues! )
:hugs: It's amazing what Matsumoto's work can do to ease the soul.
I ran across GE999 in a time when my life was horrid... and even after my horrid breakup with my ex a few years back, I went back to my beloved Matsumoto's work and it kept me happy. Weird, but it's so very true. His work reaches out and hits something in your soul.
Mine started on the first GE999 movie, and I spiraled outta of control then I do have to thank my ex for buying me Arcadia of My Youth as I had 'My Youth in Arcadia' and 'Vengance of the Space Pirate', and it got WAY worse after hearing Makio Inoue voice him
I lovelovelove Ben Dunn's Harlock. He was a huge fan of Matsumoto so he wanted to do something for his favorite character. They did the run because they thought they had permission... sadly, they didn't so it had to stop. I do remember him getting letters about how he needed to be 'thinned down'. He said regardless of what people think, Harlock's still a man, not a stick!
Did you ever see the online manga Matsumoto was doing with 'Great Harlock' (with his even greater beard?!), 'Young Harlock', 'Young Toshiro' and the Gotterdamerung?! That was simply amazing! The arch was finished and it was taken down, but he actually did it in English which was a treat!
I think I own nearly everything printed for Harlock, phone cards, manga, and soundtracks. I live at home and had TONS of disposable income... yes, I have a hole in my pocket. I'm well aware (Also, if you want any piece of the soundtrack, I'll be very happy to send your way! Everyone should have the theme of Harlock on their phone as it has... a tendency to freak out people teehee not too many people enjoy a Japanese accapella mens choral I've discovered)
I have the Harlock Saga gaspons hiding as well as some lovely models than a friend put together for me. I own the Roman album and Matusmoto's sketch book for Arcadia of My Youth (which I spazzed on because a friend in Japan found them for much cheaper than Ebay). I own all of the GE999 manga and all of Harlock's manga, including Gun Frontier (which you will die on, I swear!). I even have the horrid horrid 'ZETON' dub! *is rolling* But hey, it's the beloved Captain, so I can't complain!
Someday, I'll have to take pictures of the sketch book and upload them because they're simply beautiful. I've not seen anything like it or since... and one day, I will be getting my tattoo... as soon as I find an artist that will NOT say 'Oh, so you like the Misfits?' *facepalm*
Someday, we need to find a Matsumoto Convention. It would be fantastical! That way you could actually see some of this stuff I have!
Everyone needs to watch Arcadia of my Youth and Galaxy Express 999! Otherise, you haven't lived!
Being able to find all of that stuff, read the online manga (I couldn't, at the time it was new, because my 'oh so wonderful' grandpa was accusing me of being useless and lazy, as well as and spending too much time on the 'Net) and finding so many of the soundtracks! (The luckiest find I've been able to make, was the GE999 Harlock doll, and the Harlock Saga Harlock figure...both of which cost me an arm and a leg! XD ). The only soundtracks I have are the Harlock Saga, Cosmowarrior Zero, and Endless Odyssey.
Tattoo artists have the gall to call Harlock and the rest 'misfits'?! How dare they! (Further proof how these 'current' anime are warping people's brains...)
And is there really such a thing as a Matsumoto Convention?! (If so, then count me in! ) ^ ^
I agree with you wholeheartedly about Arcadia of My Youth and Galaxy Express (even though I haven't seen the series yet, only have part of a half-hearted translation attempt by VIZ, and only seen a couple of the movies...) no-one can truly call themselves otaku without having seen them!
Lucky in finding things maybe, but not so much lucky in life.
Since my computer ate my reply... *shakes fist at laptop*
I'm highly jealous that you have the doll! I found him once at a convention, but someone wanted more than my student loans! It was insane! *sniffles*
I uploaded a bunch of my rarer tracks for Captain Harlock, but I do have to say this particular piece: [link] is my favorite track of all time. I absolutely love it! The music done for any of Matsumoto's works is absolutely fantastic, but this... this gives that haunting mens choral of people singing on a ship, as used to be done. Anyway, as I said. I'd be happy to share the loot
I have a burned copy of Cosmo Warrior Zero as the originals are so hard to find! I was fortunate that some of the rarer cd's I recieved from a fellow Harlock fan because her husband made her get rid of them. Just to spite him, she gave them away instead of charging.
As for the tattoo, what's going on is that one of the band members from The Misfits wears a skull and crossbones very very similar to the Dokkuno. They automatically make the connection that I'm a Misfits fan because I want it tattooed. I have it all spiffy, too. I would think they'd know it wasn't the Misfits with the kanji around it. *rolls eyes* It's from the end cap of Arcadia of My Youth: Under my Flag, I live free. When I ever find someone that doesn't make that band connection, I'll have it done.
There has to be one somewhere... the man's too awesome not to have one! I know we have a Harlock panel in Ohayocon, and we were all startled to find only three (two of the hosts and me) had watched The Cockpit. Some teeny behind me kept whining that she wanted to hear about Cosmo Warrior Zero as she didn't like Harlock. My friend and I turned around and said 'You do know that he's a fantastic foil to Zero, right?' Needless to say, Madam Chairwoman is a rabbid Harlock fan with me and she fell in love with Arcadia of My Youth... yes, we're evil *giggling*
Now that track sent a chill down my spine! (Definitely a perfect theme for Harlock and the Arcadia) So please, 'share the loot'! (Though as my luck goes, if they came my way as burned CDs, they'd have to stay that way, since every time I have uploaded the MP3 player program for my player onto a computer or laptop, the damn program allows a virus in and it crashes them!
> <;;;
Guess I should consider myself lucky, though, that my husband is an otaku as well (heck, considering how much he loves Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2, two series that were running at roughly the same time as one of the Harlock series....)
Even though I'll probably never get a tattoo (yet at one point I HAVE considered it...), the closest I'll get is probably a skull-and-crossbones t-shirt. The best one I've been able to find, had been at the Mariner's Museum. It's dark grey instead of black, and the skull-and-crossbones is off-kilter, but it's the closest one in resemblance I've seen to the shirts the Arcadia's crew wears...
I've seen The Cockpit and Interstella 5555, as well! (Forgot to mention them, since there are so many other series to remember... ^ ^;; )
(and especially about that little creep from One Piece! )
However, for One Piece I do have to say that I'm much more a Chopper fan 'cause Chopper is pretty awesome for being a Magical Blue Nosed Reindeer Doctor...
